On The Record

Ordinary people, using the rules that already exist.

On The Record was built on a simple, uncomfortable truth: when something happens to you on an Irish street, the cameras that saw it are your best witness — but the footage is deleted within weeks, and almost nobody knows they have a legal right to it. This tool closes that gap.

Why it exists

The law is already on your side. Under GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018, CCTV that shows you is yourpersonal data — you can demand a copy, and demand it isn't deleted, for free. The problem was never the right. It was that exercising it is fiddly, the deadlines are tight, and the letters are intimidating. So people lose evidence they were entitled to. We turned that process into something anyone can do in a few minutes.

Whose side we're on

Yours. This isn't about watching people — it's the opposite. It points the camera back at power: at the people and institutions who break the rules, whether that's someone who assaulted you, a business that won't hand over footage, or a Garda who used excessive force. Accountability, not surveillance.

Why you can trust it with something this sensitive

  • Nothing leaves your device. There is no account and no server. Everything you type is stored only in your own browser. We couldn't read your case if we wanted to.
  • No files are uploaded. You log details of your clips and photos; the files themselves never leave your hands.
  • The urgent part is always free.Freezing the footage so it can't be deleted will never cost money — because nobody should lose evidence over a paywall.
  • You can wipe everything, instantly. One button, gone.

How we keep the lights on

The evidence-saving core is free forever. We charge a small one-off fee to unlock the "finished" materials — the formal access letters, the tailored complaint, the escalation letters, and the printable case pack — and offer a subscription for solicitors and advocacy groups who handle many cases. That's it. The payment goes through Stripe; your case never does.

An honest disclaimer

This is general information, not legal advice. It reflects Irish and EU data-protection law, but every situation is different. For serious matters, talk to a solicitor. If a crime has occurred, report it to An Garda Síochána. We help you organise and assert your rights — we don't replace professional advice.
