Who holds CCTV footage in Ireland

When something happens, more than one camera usually saw it. Here's who typically holds footage, who to address a request to, and roughly how long they keep it before it's overwritten. Retention times are typical estimates — always assume the window is shorter and act fast.

An Garda Síochána

An Garda Síochána (Garda CCTV / body-worn)

keeps ~31 days

Data access request to the Garda Data Protection Office, or hand it in at the relevant Garda station. See garda.ie › data protection.

If Gardaí were present, their body-worn and station/community CCTV can be requested. Retention is often about a month.

Garda body-worn camera footage

keeps ~31 days

Request via the Garda Data Protection Office. Gardaí now wear body-worn cameras under the Recording Devices Act 2023.

If Gardaí were involved, demand their body-worn footage AND independent nearby cameras — don't rely only on footage the Gardaí hold.

Garda station / custody CCTV

keeps ~31 days

Request via the Garda Data Protection Office, naming the station and the time you were there.

Council / Local authority CCTV

Local Authority town/city CCTV

keeps ~28 days

Data protection officer of the local council (e.g. Dublin City Council, Cork City Council). Most publish a DPO contact online.

Public-realm CCTV in many town and city centres is run by the council. Some schemes are Garda-operated — send to both if unsure.

Public transport

Luas customer care / data protection — luas.ie.

Bank / ATM

Bank / ATM camera

keeps ~60 days

The bank's data protection officer. ATM cameras are held by the bank that owns the machine.

Bank/ATM footage is often kept longer than shop footage.

Petrol station

Circle K / Applegreen (petrol station)

keeps ~31 days

Ask the station for the data controller and DPO. Forecourts usually have good multi-angle CCTV.

Pub / Restaurant / Hotel

Pub / Nightclub / Restaurant

keeps ~30 days

Address to the venue's owner/manager as data controller. Licensed premises usually keep door and interior CCTV.

Home / Doorbell camera

Home / Doorbell camera (Ring, etc.)

keeps ~30 days

Knock and ask politely, or leave a note. Neighbours' doorbell cameras often catch the street.

A neighbour's camera isn't covered by a formal SAR the same way, but people will often share footage if asked kindly and quickly.

Private business premises

Other business premises

keeps ~30 days

Address to the business as data controller and ask for their DPO.

Vehicle dashcam

Passing vehicle dashcam / taxi

keeps ~7 days

Hard to trace, but taxis and buses in the area may have forward and interior cameras. Appeal locally/online quickly.

Dashcam loops overwrite fast — sometimes within days. Speed matters most here.
